词根派生pre-（在前）+ vent（来）= "来在……之前"。想象抢先到达门口、堵住它：你来在了正要发生的事之前，挡住了它的路。较早的中性义（「先到」）消退了，只留下今天用的「阻挡」义。

注意 prevent somebody from doing 的句法：现代英语里 from 不可省（prevent him from leaving，不能说 prevent him to leave）。也可直接 prevent 某物（prevent disease），此时无 from。另外 prevent 语气较强，含「成功阻止」之意，而非仅仅尝试。
