tempor（「时间」）+ -al（「与……有关」）=「与时间有关的」。这是朴素含义（temporal order 时序）。中世纪神学随后又添了第二层：与永恒（上帝、灵魂）相对，凡被时间束缚的都属于这个易逝的尘世——因此 temporal power =尘世的、世俗的权威。
