源自拉丁语 jūstus（合乎法律的、公正的），而 jūstus 来自 jūs（法律、权利）。justice 是事物「合乎正道」的*状态*。同一个词根既给出抽象价值（公平），又给出实现它的具体制度（法院），甚至给出法官的尊称。
